ORINI SCHOOL FUNCTION

END-OF-YEAR DANCE Seldom has the Orini Hall presented such § carnival air as was evident recently when the Orini School held its fancy dress ball. Decorated with pink and mauve streamers and masses of pink rambler roses the stage presented an artistic background for the colourful fancy dresses. Coloured lights, Chinese lanterns and multi-coloured balloons added to the festive appearance. During the evening the children entertained the audience with displays of massed drill, folk dances, figure marching and rhythmic work. The precision with which these items were carried out reflects great credit on the teachers responsible for their training. At the conclusion of the children’s programme Mr Smith, headmaster, thanked the parents for their cooperation during the year and drew attention to the valuable work done by the school committee. The children also appreciated the committee’s efforts and on their behalf four of the senior girls presented books, suitably inscribed to Messrs J. Seath, F. Denham, H. Garnham and J. Carewell. Mr J. Seath in reply thanked and complimented the children. The senior prefect, Gilbert Howell, in a brief speech on behalf of the children thanked Miss Cowie and Mr Smith for their assistance during the year and presented them with Christmas boxes. Supper was served and dancing to music supplied by Mr Kenneth Martin concluded a most enjoyable function. The Prize-winners The judging of the costumes was carried out by Mesdames T. Smith, E.
