OUTRIGHT VICTORY
OLD BOYS BEATS HAMILTON J. EVEREST STRIKES FORM Old Boys maintained the excellent position it had last week against Claudelands and won by eight wickets after a day’s uninteresting cricket. Batting on the first day, Hamilton made 91 to which Old Boys replied with* 143 Tor eight. The team added only seven runs on Saturday and when Hamilton’s second knock realised 134, Old Boys was left with 76 to get for an outright victory. This was accomplished with only two wickets down.
The feature of the match was the return to form of J. Everest, who scored 53 in a really bright knock. Few other batsmen shone, the bowlers having the upper hand throughout and causing a good deal of trouble on the crumbling wicket and with the strong wind. Aitken (42) and Crabb (0) continued their innings and after the captain had secured five, his partner played all over one from Norman Winger and was bowled. Hansen lasted until the total was 150 and was out to the same bowler, leaving Aitken unconquered with 49. Aitken played right through the innings for his score and at no time was really troubled by the attack. Norman Winger Out Hamilton was faced with a rainaffected wicket and an uneviable task was afforded Norman Winger and .Lissette, the opening pair. When four rims were on the board Winger lashed out wildly at a ball from Hansen and his off stump went down. ♦ Content to allow the runs to come, Lissette made few mistakes and when he was dismissed with the score at 87, only 29 runs were to his credit after over one hour’s play. A full toss was despatched by J. Everest through the slips and this appeared to give him confidence and his failure in the first innings was followed by a bright half-century. With successive balls he found the leg ! boundary, L. Higginson offering the ! batsman plenty of opportunities with full tosses. Everest lost his wicket when he played a ball on. Sandford did not display the ! crisp strokes which marked his first venture and was out when he swung one from Harding right into Clough’s hands at square leg. Four wickets were down for 99 and *‘t appeared as ii Hamilton would ! ma.-:e an appreciable score, but the ! later latsmen la: led to get amongst I the runs. R. Everest made most imj pressicn on the cow.'- i.g. batting in i resolute stvie for 20. Crabb -nj.i Harding, who were getting plenty assistance from the c-ambling wick A, caused all the damage Old Boys Bats Again Faced with a deficit of 75 runs, Old Boys had a reasonably easy ta.sk ahead when West and Higginson opened the second venture. Higginson was having a new experience taking this position in the list and it was no doubt hoped that he would make up for his succession of failures this season. However, the same ball which has troubled him time and again, a low one coming in towards his legs, accounted for him when he had secured one run. I West, after notching a series of ! singles, got amongst the runs and ! played his best innings to date. He did well to use his sound defence and allow the runs to come and when he was dismissed by a low forward catch by Pedrotti, he was in a scoring mood and promised to add appreciably to the total. The objective was reached with Aitken and Clough together and oi that stage both batsmen opened out, each passing 20 in breezy style. Details:—• HAMILTON First Innings 9] Second Innings N.
