CLAUDELAND’S LATE COLLAPSE

FOUR-POINT WIN SECURED BY OLD BOYS

ALL-ROUNDERS IN FORM ON RAIN-AFFECTED WICKETS Three runs meant the difference between victory and defeat to Claudelands on Saturday when the Hamilton Senior A cricket competition was continued in cloudy weather at Seddon Park. Against the competition leaders, Hamilton East, Claudelands had every chance of winning, judging by the team’s display on the first day but when the match was continued the sting in the wicket after heavy rain was too much for the tail-end batsmen and the side was dismissed three runs short of its objective. Old Boys and Hamilton met in a rather tame encounter on the main wicket and the former won by eight wickets, securing a fourpointer. The Old Boys batsmen gave a consistent display although there were no brilliant scoring efforts and victory was obtained with plenty of time to spare. Generally the bowlers were on top and several gave quite good performances. O. Harding, the tall Old Boys player, indicated that he will have a successful season in both departments of the game, by taking five Hamilton wickets for 26 runs and passing 30 when batting on the first day. J. Everest gave another all-round performance by taking six for 34 for Hamilton and hitting up a bright 53. His batting effort followed a poor display last week. Hunt (Claudelands) accounted for four East batsmen at a cost of only 20 runs. Best of the batsmen were : A. J. Aitken (Old Boys) who played right through the innings for a useful 49, and Bright (East) who batted attractively lor 53. The following are the positions of the teams with one match played in the second round : Hamilton East 11, Old Boys 11, Claudelands 7, Hamilton 3.
