CLAUDELANDS FAILS

FIRST INNINGS COLLAPSE HAMILTON EAST SNATCHES WIN After an excellent start the Claudelands team collapsed badly in the later stages of its first innings and failed to overtake the Hamilton East total of 124 by only three runs. The situation was tense towards the end of the Claudelands venture when three wickets fell for only one run and East snatched victory from the jaws of defeat. Badeley was responsible for a great bowling finale and his performance on the day was three wickets for 31 runs. After compiling 80 runs for three wickets last week, Claudelands continued its innings with Edmond and H. Lyon and both batted solidly under difficult conditions to consoli - date the position. Edmond played a particularly attractive innings eventually going leg before.

- I The chances of the team were dei j clining when Clark and then Hemi : J were dismissed. Badeloy struck a i | patch and accounted for Buckland l j and Mackley in quick succession i ! thus ensuring victory for East by a J j narrow margin on the first innings. l Had the batsmen risked dismissal bv • j forcing the pace they might have r J passed their opponents’ total and had j the honour of defeating the competition leaders. Bright’s Fine Innings There was no doubt about the decision at that stage but East batted ■ again. Bright was the only batsman ■ to impress and opened the innings in attractive fashion, displaying shots all round the wicket. He cut and , drove in truly jgreat style to register . one of his best knocks this season. Partnering Bright was Cassidy but the latter appeared to lack dash, was not sighting the ball correstly and bis dismissal was not surprising. When Jordan joined Bright the scoring rate decreased to a great extent. However, Jordan was an early victim and Badeley entered to take ! the score along in merry style, both | he and Bright demonstrating really attractive cricket. With the dismissal of these two batsmen the rot set i in and the remaining members of ! the team were completely nonplussed by the deadly attack of Hunt and Ewan. Hunt sent down some excellent deliveries and captured four wickets for 20 runs off seven overs. Difficult Task With over 100 runs to get and about half-an-hour to play Claudelands was set a difficult task .and as the light was failing it was decided to draw stumps. What had promised to be a most interesting encounter was deprived of most of its interest by an unfortunate first inning’s collapse. Details:— HAMILTON EAST First Innings 124 Second Innings J. D.
