MANY PIGS LOST

TOLL OF DISEASE INCIDENCE IN WAIKATO Considerable numbers of pig* have been lost by Waikato producers this season from a disease more commonly known as swine typhus. The disease is a highly contageous one and has even occurred on properties where the owners have been careful not to introduce new stock from outside sources. A Raglan producer recently lost 40 pigs from the disease, which is causing no small amount of anxiety in some areas. One authority expressed the opinion this morning that the disease was possibly anthrax, and if this were the case then pig producers would be facing a new and serious problem. However, inquiries at the Ruakura Animal Research Station this morning indicated that the disease, outbreaks of which had been experienced in the Waikato in previous year*, was not likely to be anthrax.
