AERODROME SCHEME

TE AROHA DISTRICT NEED PRESENT TIME INOPPORTUNE (Special to Times) TE AROHA, Tuesday At a representatives meeting held in the Piako County Council Chambers last week, it was unanimously decided that owing to the fact that there was no prospect of Government assistance at the present time, the proposed district aerodrome scheme be held over until such time as prospects of financial support assumed a more definite form. Those present were:— Messrs W. A Gordon, A. E. Wrigley, W. D. Hay (Matamata Borough Council), Timms and Pohlen (Matamata County Council), Edwards (Paeroa Borough Council), Barrett (Ohinemuri County Council), A. G. Strahan, H. F. McConnell, D. Johnson (Morrinsville Borough), V. G. Hamilton (Te Aroha Borough), L. C. Mackie, T. S. Townsend (Te Aroha Aero Club), D. J. Burgess, W. C. Kennedy, B. H. Hamer, F. I. Clarke (Piako County Council). Mr W. C. Kennedy was elected chairman.

The latest communication from the Public Works Department stated that finance to assist in the development of new aerodromes would not be available in this year’s estimates. The department, however, urged all interested bodies to continue the search for a suitable site. It was likely that the Government would be prepared to assist at some future time. Mr Pohlen said that the time was not opportune to continue with the project, and moved that the Piako County Council be empowered to call a meeting at some future date. Stating that he considered it unwise to pass such a resolution, Mr Edwards moved the following: “While this meeting considers an airport essential for this district, it thinks that, in view of present conditions, it is advisable to adjourn the meeting and authorise the Piako County Council to call a further meeting when the time is considered opportune.”

On being put to the meeting, the motion was carried unanimously.
