OBITUARY
MR JOHN MACKAY The death has occurred at his residence, Dundonald, Newstead, of Mr John Mackay, a, well-known resident of the Waikato, aged 82 years. The late Mr Mackay was born at Kilbride, Kilmichel, Argyllshire, in 1857, and was educated at Stranraer Academy and at Edinburgh. Arriving in New Zealand in the sailing ship Taranaki in 1873, Mr Mackay worked for several years on large sheep stations in Canterbury and Otago, before taking up land in Southland. Later he moved to Taranaki, in the Ohura country, and in 1913 purchased a farm at Newstead, retaining a holding in the King Country. His home near Hamilton was the centre of his life, and he did not seek public office. To his personal friends he was known as “The Laird.” ' Mrs Mackay died some years ago, and two of the sons were killed in the Great War. There survive two daughters, residents of Newstead, and two sons, one in Fiji and the other, Dr. Reay Mackay, in Wellington.
