DRIVER KILLED
TROTTING TRAGEDY FALL FROM SULKY HEART SEIZURE SUSPECTED (By Telegraph.—Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday Falling from his sulky while driving Colonel Grattan in the New Zealand Trotting Cup at Addington this afternoon, Mr E. C. McDermott, a well-known trainer and driver, died shortly afterward. It is thought that Mr McDermott had a seizure before falling. Colonel Grattan was in the lead after a mile and a-half had been covered and when his rider fell he went on to cross the line first. Mr McDermott was rushed to the Christchurch Public Hospital, but nothing could be done for him. Mr McDermott, who was aged about 50, had been interested in trotting since his youth and had bred and raced many hoi'.es. Among the most successful were Capriccio and Garner. He drove many good winners, including Indianapolis in the 1934 New Zealand Cup, and Colonel Grattan. He came from the Leeston district and was a cattle dealer as well as a trotting trainer. He was a popular figure in the trotting world. Mr McDermott is survived by his wife and one son.
