STATE CONTROL
ACCLIMATISATION AFFAIRS OPPOSITION IN CANTERBURY PUBLIC WORKS DETRIMENTAL (Special to Times) CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday About 90 per cent of the voting papers returned by members of the South Canterbury Acclimatisation Society on the question of the Government taking control of acclimatisation affairs in the Dominion were against the proposal, it was reported to a meeting of the society’s council by the acting-secretary, Mr F. J. Robertson. Mr McDonald, who presided, said if only the Government would leave the South Canterbury Society alone the society would be all right. What the Public Works Department was doing was very detrimental to the society, and as far as anglers were concerned it could be regarded as public enemy No. 1. A great deal of water was being taken out of the Rangitata River with a detrimental effect on the fish, as also was the case in the Opihi River. A further point was what was likely to happen to angling at Lake Alexandrina when the Lake Tekapo damming scheme was carried out. VISITOR IMPRESSED AMAZED AT SIZE OF FISH (Special to Times.) AUCKLAND, Tuesday The Lord Mayor of Sydney, Sir Norman Nock, who arrived in Auckland by motor-car from Rotorua today, paid tribute to the Department of Internal Affairs for the great strides made to improve the fresh water fishing facilities. Sir Norman fished in Lake Okataina, accompanied by Mr G. K. Bain, of Sydney, Mr G. Jackson and Mr H. C. Kent, of Wellington. One member of the party landed a l(Hlb. trout and another one of 9^lb. Sir Norman was amazed to learn that such fish could be caught, and he was taking the smoked fish home to show that he was telling no fish story.
