MAORI BATTALION

OFFICER PROBLEM DEMAND BY ARAWAS (Special to Times) ROTORUA, Monday A meeting of representatives of all the sub-tribes of the Arawa confederation held at Meketu on Sunday decided to forward a resolution to the Minister of Defence, the Hon. F. Jones, stating that unless the original promise to draw officers for the proposed Maori Battalion from the rank* of the Maoris themselves it adhered to the Arawas are not prepared to give any guarantee that volunteer* will present themselves for medical examination and attestation. The opinion was expressed that only the commanding officer of the battalion should be a European and strong resentment was expressed at the reported intention to appoint other European officers.
