TRAIN DERAILMENT

PASSENGERS ESCAPE INJURY TRACK DAMAGED INVERCARGILL, Tuesday Five trucks, a horse box and two carriages were derailed north of Brydone Hill when a mixed train was derailed. None of the six passengers was injured, although an elderly woman was treated for shock. The carriages remained upright as they left the rails, but the trucks, which were filled with coal, capsized, some rolling down an embankment.

The horse box contained a Clydesdale farmer champion and it was necessary to use an axe to release the horse, which was uninjured. The track was considerably damaged and the express was delayed for an hour and a-half.
