The Japanese claim to have surrounded 500,000 Chinese troops under the direct command of Marshal Chiang Kai-shek, in the mountains north of Changsha. Japanese naval aeroplanes are subjecting these troops to merciless bombing and machine-gun attacks. ATTACK BY SOVIET FIRE ON MANCHUKUO VESSEL (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) LONDON, Sept. 28 It is alleged that Soviet patrol boats fired on a Manchukuo vessel sailing up the River Amur, which forms the boundary between Manchukuo and Russia, according to a Daventry broadcast.
