STAGE PRODUCTIONS

Notice to Correspondents R.H., Wellington.—Many thanks for the nice things you say about this page. It was certainly encouraging to read:— “ I am writing this short note in appreciation of your theatrical page in the Waikato Times. I think it will be of interest to you to know that on a Monday morning it is almost impossible to get near a copy in the Wellington Public Library. “ It is wonderful to find someone who really has faith in and loves the theatre. Let me thank you for your page. May it continue to carry on the good work.” Marie Burke’s Daughter Patricia Burke is one of the singing and dancing stars of “Sitting Pretty,” a new musical comedy in London,* that looks like being a great success. Miss Burke is a daughter of Marie Burke, the well-known musical comedy lead, who returned to Sydney recently and took the lead in a revival of “Wildflower.” Alec Regan In Australia Alec Regan, well known in New Zealand, has been appointed a theatre manager in Adelaide, South Australia. Mr Regan was for a long time very popular as light comedian with Clem Dawe’s “ Midnight Frolics,” and then became manager of several theatres in New eZaland, including the Regent in Auckland. North China Troupe for Hamilton Much interest has been aroused in the coming appearance of the North China Troupe. The principal entertainer, Lau Fu Chung, presents an entirely different type of vaudeville from that usually staged, and his quaint style has a wide appeal. The show moves at a fast pace and for an hour and a-half, devoted to the Oriental portion of the programme, sensation follows sensation with almost incredible feats of acrobatics, dancing and gymnastics. One of the features is the performance of Mademoiselle Wang Tsun, who, while suspended in mid-air by her hair, goes through a series of contortions. Known as the nine-year-old Chinese “Bobby Breen,” Herbert Young sings soprano songs in perfect English. The first part of the programme is devoted to six European vaudeville acts.
