TELEVISION PLANS
WITHIN YEAR OR TWO EFFECT ON THE CINEMA “Television will be popular everywhere within the next year or, at the most, the next two years,” said John Murray Anderson when he discussed his recent inquiries into television progress. Mr Anderson, producer of the films “The King of Jazz” and “Bow Bells,” •O ver the Page” and “Jumbo,” is on holiday in London before going to Hollywood, where he will probably direct another film. “America is fast becoming really television-conscious,” he said, “and I am glad to find that this is also happening in this country. Tremendous Possibilities “The tremendous possibilities of television are at last being realised by more than just the few. The amount of work for writers and producers and players which regular, universal televising would provide is tremendous. The public, I think, is ready for something new in entertainment. “But.” he added quickly, “don’t think that everyone will give up going to the cinema when television sets are in every home. At first no doubt the novelty of the thing may keep people at home; but it won't be long before the social instincts come to the top again; then people will want to go out and join their friends and feel the contact of fellow beings at the cinema. ' "Television can, and will very soon, take its place in our life, and I'm certain it will prove a good thing.” Mr Anderson is studying television methods with a view to producing shows in the near future. ' Somerset Maugham’s story, “The ■ Villa on the Hill,” has been bought for Bette Davis. • * * . Sigrid Gurie has married Dr. Laurence C. Spangard, 42-year-old Hollywood physician.
