PROFESSOR C. W. EGERTON

(Special to Times) AUCKLAND, Wednesday Professor Charles William Egerton died yesterday at his home in Remuera, at the age of 77. He was a member of the staff of the Auckland University College for 40 years. Bom in Liverpool, England, he had a brilliant university career at Trinity College, Dublin. In 1890 he was appointed lecturer in the English language at Queen Margaret College, Glasgow, and while occupying that position was chosen as lecturer on English literature and modem history to the West of Scotland University Extension Board. Professor Egerton was appointed to the chair of English at Auckland University College in 1894. During his occupancy of the chair he represented the college for a lengthy term on the Academic Board of the University of New Zealand and was chairman of the Professorial Board on a number of occasions. When he was about to retire in 1932 the university authorities appealed to him to continue for another year, and he did so until the end of 1933. With Professor Segar and Professor W. E. Thomas, who retired at the same time, he was accorded a public farewell, when many tributes were paid to his work for the college and among his students, and he was accorded the title of professor emeritus.
