SPECIAL RECRUITS KEEN TO SERVE COUNTRY ENLISTMENTS IN HAMILTON MEDICAL EXAMINATIONS BEGIN The determination of New Zealand to play a worthy part in the European conflict and to take its share of the responsibilities falling upon each member of the Commonwealth of Nations forming the British Empire, has been reiterated in no uncertain way in Hamilton. Today the number of enlistments with the Dominion’s special military force for home or overseas service reached 1009 for the No. 4 military area. Manhood in this district has pro- • dueed one-seventh of the GGoO troops required in the Dominion, and ‘the Northern Command has found over two-thirds of the total. Men are still rallying to the colours and each diy brings a substantial increase in the number of volunteers. Of the 1009 enrolments In the No. 4 area, G 8 are officers. Of the men of other ranks 810 are unmarried. Hamilton borough and post offices m the northern end of the area have sent 830 men to the colours, the remaining enlistments being made in the To Kuiti end of the area. Scene at the Drill Hall Today the Drill Hall in Hamilton was the scene of considerable activity. The medical examination of the men was begun, marking a decisive step in the preparation of New Zealand’s initial volunteer force for active service. On Friday and Saturday a few men were examined, the number for the two days being only 40. Today, however, medical practitioners were engaged all day from 8.30 a.m. Galled to be examined in batches of 30, the men reported at intervals. Men in uniform marshalled the recruits at the Drill Hall, where thorough preparations had been made for the big task of examining 160 men on the first day. Thorough examinations were made, including dental, eye tests, hearing, general measurements and a general overhaul.
