SPECIAL RECRUITS DOMINION TOTAL 6655 HAMILTON WELL UP IN LIST POOREST IN SOUTHERN DISTRICT (Bjr Telegraph.—special to Timas) WELLINGTON, Tuesday The Minister of Defence, the Hon. V, Jones, announced in the House of Representatives that up to nine o'clock tonight 6655 registrations of volunteers for military service within or heyond New Zealand had been made. The announcement was greeted with applause. Mr Jone 6, who spoke Immediately before the House adjourned, said the total was made up as follows: Northern Military District.— Auckland 1279 Paeroa area 466 Whangarei area ... 356 Hamilton area .... 530 District total 2631 Central Military District Wellington 1157 Wanganui 353 Napier 540 lllawera ......... 444 District total 2494 Southern Military DletrleL— Christchurch .... 620 Dunedin 330 Nelson 300 Invercargill 290 District total ’. 1530 The Minister said the ready reaponse of the young men of New Zealand had been most striking. In addition, there had been a wonderful answer to tbe appeal for recruits tor the Air Force. "I think members will loin with me in expressing appreciation to these younig men," added Mr Jones. LATEST RETURNS FROM OTHER CENTRES Additional returns from other centres, showing the progress of recruiting for the special force, for service overseas or elsewhere, are:— Auckland.—The total enlistments in Auckland city up to mid-day, totalled 1339, including 60 to-day. Mastarton.—Enlistments now total 150, and many more expected. Dannavlrke.—At noon the eclietments totalled 115.
