TE AWAMUTU

PABTORAL ASSOCIATION ANNUAL MEETING HELD At the annual meeting of the Te Awamutu Agricultural, Pastoral and Horticultural Association, Mr J. Pattison presided. The report showed that, as a result of the successful show, accumulated funds now stood at £305. an increase of £l2O. The financial statement showed total receipts at £715 and expenditure amounting to £595. All last year’s officers were reelected with the addition of Mr W. J. Melville to the committee. A suggestion was made that some organisation be set up to supervise farms of men who may become members of the New Zealand military, naval or air forces. The arrangement made during the last war was mentioned and it was felt that a conference of the association, Farmers’ Union, Returned Soldiers’ Association and Chamber of Commerce should he convened to go into the question which was an important one. CENTENNIAL MEMORIAL PROPOSAL ABANDONED The Centennial Memorial Executive at Te Awamutu has decided that, in view of the outbreak of war. the proposed Queen Carnival be abandoned. Mr J. T. Johnson presided at a recent meeting. Messrs Connal and Barnett reported that meetings convened to support the town and sports efforts had lapsed for lack of interest and there was no indication that there would be any improvement. Mr Neill reported that the Farmers’ Union had set up a subcommittee to co-operate with the Agricultural and Pastoral Association. The chairman said that though the acting-Prime Minister and his cabinet had urged that the Centennial celebrations should go on \.ith a continuance of as many of the minor efforts as possible, he did not agree, for only those which had been well advanced had any prospect of success. In Te | Awamutu's case, he felt that any effort | was doomed, for calls in future would I be for patriotic purposes in maintain- j ing defence and industry. It was agreed to notify the District j Public Trustee that it was not pro- : posed to exercise the option of pur- ! of the Macdonald Estate land, i

The committee will go into recess, hut application will be made to the Waikato Zone Committee for a €SOO subsidy from the Government for the Centennial memorial in the hope that normal conditions may prevail in the near future.
