VALUE OF CORN CROP (To The Editor) Sir, —Mr Herbert D’Arcy’s suggestion that the people of New Zealand should turn their attention seriously to the more extensive growing of corn is worthy of notice, not only by individuals who have areas of land at their disposal but also by the Government authorities. The growing of corn, indeed, might well be taken more seriously in peace time without waiting for the emergency of war. It provides palatable and nutritious foods, and it is strange that they are not more popular. Corn or maize, will grow readily in almost all New Zealand soils, but yields particularly prolific crops in the Gisborne and Bay of Plenty districts. In addition to providing a widely useful grain, the green crop is a valuable stock fodder, particularly in the dry late summer season. In many respects corn is an exceedingly valuable crop which may usefully be grown on small or large areas, and it is to be hoped that Mr D’Arcy’s advice will receive the attention it merits.—l am, etc..
