LIME INDUSTRY
INQUIRY BY COMMI6BION FARMERS TO SUBMIT EVIDENCE PRICE AND GOST OF TRANSPORT A committee to collect evidence relating to the lime industry as It affects the Waikato, for submission to the Excutive-Commission of Agriculture, when it sits in Hamilton, was set up at a meeting of the Waikato subprovincial executive of the New- Zealand Farmers’ Union to-day. The members of the committee are Messrs W. Somerville, N. Fletcher and D. B. Guildford. Mr J. H. Furniss outlined the various aspects of the industry which would probably be considered by the Commission. Regarding duplication in the transport of lime, Mr Furniss said that the Government was considering modifying transport costs, by which it was hoped to save about £30,000. With the amount saved it was the Government’s intention to assist road transport in back-block areas where the railways were not operating. The matter of zoning would no doubt be considered, also that of the free carriage of lime within a 100 miles radius in the Waikato. The question of the value of the various limes on the market and the suggestion of raising the prices of the product would, Mr Furniss stated, be considered by the Commission. He advised that strong evidence against any increase in price should be brought forward on behalf of the South Auckland sub-province. Mr F. C. Roberts expressed the opinion that the most the South Auckland executive could do was to press for retention of the 100 miles limit and oppose any increase in the cost of lime.
