FLOATING DOCK

FIRM’S OFFER TO AUSTRALIA BIG SAVING IN GOST (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) CANBERRA, March 1 It is reported that a leading British firm has offered to sell a floating dock to the Commonwealth for £250,000. The dock could be installed in Australia for about £500,000, compared with the cost of £2,000,000 for the building of a local dock capable of accommodating battleships. The Federal Government is considering the offer. The Jubilee floating dock at Wellington was built in 1931 by Swan, Hunter and Wigham Richardson, Ltd., at Wallsend-on-Tyne, for a contract price of £196,125, but by the time it had been towed to New Zealand it represented a capital investment of £250,000. The lifting capacity of the dock is 17,000 tons, but provision has been made for the addition, if necessary, of another section, increasing the capacity to 20,000 tons.
