THE NEW POPE
CARDINAL PACELLI MENTIONED OPENING OF THE CONCLAVE (Independent Cable) VATICAN CITY, Feb. 28 Cardinal Pacelli stands out as the probable choice as the next Pope by 27 non-Italian Cardinals, while 35 Italians still apparently favour Cardinal Massimi. Officials at the Vatican point out that in addition to foreign votes Cardinal Pacelli is strongly favoured by many Italians in spite of the tradition against the election of the secretary of the late Pope. Cardinal Pacelli needs a two-thirds majority to secure election. The Conclave of Cardinals will formally begin to-day. The great bell of St. Peter's rang three times. Architects inspected the doors to ensure that they were locked inside and outside. The deed of closing was then read and signed.
