WAIKATO v. TARANAKI PLAY IN HAMILTON PHYSICAL FITNESS WEEK FIXTURE Signalising the commencement of Physical T-itness Week in Hamilton the annual Waikato-Taranaki tennis match was held at the Hamilton Lawn Tennis Club's courts, Rostrevor Street, todav. The weather was fine but overeasi and the playing surface fast. The best match of the men’s singles, which were divided, was that between Livingstone and McCarthy. Three advantage sets were played, Livingstone staving off several match points in the second before he won it at 12 —10. Although the tennis was not of a particularly high standard, and both players made bad mistakes

at critical stages, it was an interesting contest. J. Roach was not troubled in winning his match with A. Dickie, while of other games E. Dickie's win over L. Roach was taken more easily than was anticipated. Contrary to expectations Waikato obtained the lion's share of the women’s singles, the first three matches being won comparatively easily. Miss Z. Holmes prevailed in a marathon contest with Miss Graham, who fought on gamely. Results were as follows, Waikato names mentioned first:—

Graham, 3— 6. 6 —3, 6 —4; Miss L. Kirk beat Miss M. Broome, 6 —4, 6 — 2. Women’s Singles Miss M. Beverley beat Miss M. Dickie, 6—2, 6—2 : Miss N. Beverley beat Miss K. O’Sullivan, 6—o, 6—2; Miss C. Buckley beat Miss D. Dickie, 6 —3, 6—o; Miss M. Inman lost to Miss M. Hine, 3—6, 4—6. D. B. Living-stone lost to J. J. McCarthy, 5 —7, 12—10, 5—7; R. Matuschka beat S. Clifford Jones, 2— 6, 6 —l, 6 —4.
