Desperate for funds after a series of carousals, they plotted to rob a 91-year-old farmer, Elko Cottick, who they believed had wealth concealed on him. They broke into his farmhouse, beatin gand trussing Cottick. His wife resisted but was fatally beaten. Accused were arrested only as suspects but the trial supplied damaging evidence unknowingly by a discussion of the crime and an agreement to tell the same story in court, all of which was recorded through a hidden police radio in the cells.
