FALL OF SIXTY FEET

TRUCK OVER BANK TURNS THREE SOMERBAULTB DRIVER JUMPS CLEAR Slewing sideways when one of Che chocks at the top of the bank gave way. one of Messrs Grinter Bros’, trucks engaged on the removal of spoil from Garden Place Hill rolled into the dump at the southern end of Anglesea Street at 5.40 p.m. yesterday. The driver. Mr A. Middleton, jumped clear and was not injured. At the time of the accident the vehicle was backing to the edge of the bank to dump a load nf spoil and when the wooden ehock gave way the truck rolled over three times and came to rest on its wheels 50ft or 60ft below. The cab of the truck was considerably damaged, the sides of the tray were torn off and the mudguards were smashed. It was impossible to drive the truck from its resting-place and a motor firm was commissioned to remove it with a winch.

This is only the second mishap involving the trucks since they began operations on January 10, and during that time over 10,000 trips have been made. The former occasion was when truck No. 13 collided with a baker’s van at Whitiora about a fortnight ago.
