TAXI-DRIVERS’ DISPUTE
UNIFORM CONTROL WANTED MINISTER TO BE APPROACHED (By Telegrapn.—press Assoelatlon) WELLINGTON, Wednesday At the conclusion of to-day’s sitting of the Conciliation Council considering the Dominion taxi-drivers’ dispute, it was decided to send a deputation to the Minister of Transport, the Hon. IR. Semple, to ask him to have the whole industry brought under uniform control as soon as possible. The council spent the whole day discussing claims and counter-claims, but reached finality on only a few minor clauses, the remainder being held over for further discussion at sittings to be held to-morrow and on Friday. The employers contended that the award would affect regularly only about a tenth of the cabs in New Zealand. The industry desired betterment of conditions, but only on lines applicable to the whole. A joint deputation to the Minister was suggested to ask that control over the industry be introduced immediately. The Biil promised had been passed, so its regulations would apply coincidentally with the award. The workers agreed to support the employers in the deputation.
