SECURITY BUILDING
DIFFICULTIES OVERCOME COUNCIL NOT OBSTRUCTIONIST (By Telegraph—Press Association) WELLINGTON, Wednesday Difficulties arising from the Government’s intention -to erect the new social security building close to the existing road frontage in Aotea Quay have been settled as a result of discussions between the Mayor, Mr T. C. A. Hislop, and City Council officers, and the Minister of Finance, the Hon. W. Nash, and the Minister of Industries and Commerce, the Hon. D. G. Suiiivan. Arrangements have been made to provide for ample access for cars by a roadway along the rear of the social security building and for parking ©pace alongside the building but off the roadway. It has also been arranged that this roadway will continue north along the rear of the railway land. In the event of this land being utilised by the Railways Department or lessees, ample provision will be made to keep clear of the main road, 55ft. wide through from the ramp to Waterloo Quay. Referring to the City Council’s views and the discussions the Mayor said:— ‘Nt is quite incorrect to suggest that the Wellington City Council is anxious to find some means of stopping the Government from proceeding with the social security scheme. “lOur discussions were characterised by a spirit of mutual helpfulness, and as a result I shall be able to report to the council on lines which I think will be generally satisfactory. I think it can be said the citizens' interests have now been protected.’’
