HOCKEY PLAYERS
WAIKATO NOMINATIONS TRIAL GAME ON BATURDAY AUCKLAND TEAM IN HAMILTON The Waikato Hockey Association has nominated three players to represent New Zealand in the forthcoming test matches against the touring Indian team. The chosen are W. Smillie (Kaipaki; goalkeeper, R. Spiers (Waipa) halfback, and R. Burns (Waipa), halfback. D. Pountney was not available. Smillie was a member of the last All Black team to visit 'Australia, where he earned a great reputation as a goalie. Spiers and Burns have not played for New Zealand but both have shown good form this season and no doubt they will be watched by the selectors. Pountney was one of the fullbacks In the team which went to Australia.
On Saturday a trial match for the New Zealand eleven will be played in Hamilton between Auckland and Waikato. Both teams are particularly strong and some good hockey is assured. The New Zealand selectors from Auckland and Wellington will be present at Steele Park and the encounter will be taken Into consideration when the New Zealand team Is being selected. The following will represent Waikato against Auckland:—
Goal, W. Smillie (Kaipaki); fullbacks, D- Pountney (Old Boys), K. Beale (Aotea) ; half-backs, R. Spiers (Waipa), A. King (Piako), R. Burns (Waipa) ; forwards, F. Forster (Aotea), M. Stevens (Piako), J. Grimmer (Rodney), C. J. Spiers (Waipa), captain; G. Boyd (Kaipaki). Emergencies: Fullbacks, J. Pountney (Old Boys) ; halves, A. McKinnon (Old Boys), C. Harvey (Colts); forwards, J. Perrett (Colts). As the match is a trial game in preparation for the tests against the Indian team, the Waikato selector agreed to Include the North Auckland centre forward, Grimmer.
