SHEARING IN LONDON
HYDE PARK FLOCKS To be a farmer’s boy in Hyde Park is quite possible nowadays. The sheep-shearing there used to be dune by shearers from Wales, but now the English Young Farmers’ Clubs are to take a hand, if the word may be used concerning mechanical sheep-shearing. The competition has been arranged by the National Federation of Y'oung Farmers' Clubs in conjunction with the firms who are supplying the sheepshearing equipment. Sir Philip Sassoon, the First Commissioner of Works, is to present medals for the three best teams and for the first and second individual scorers. Teams have been entered from Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Nottinghamshire, East Sussex, West Sussex, Gloucester, Devon, Somerset, Montgomery, Cardigan, Monmouth, and Cumberland. This year the sheep in Hyde Park belong to a breeder of Nazeing, Essex. Besides the Hyde Park sheep there are sheep in Kensington Gardens, Hampstead Heath, and other places. It would be interesting to know what is done with the wool of the London parte sheep; the appropriate thing would be for it to be used for the uniform of the park rangers. Perhaps better would be to use it. to stuff the woolsack in the House of I<ords, now that somebody has blown the gaff on the horsehair stuffing of that national piece of furniture.
