FIRM SALE

VALUES AT FRANKTON BEEF AGAIN FIRM EAGER TRADE FOR PIGS A lively market for fat cattle resulted In fully firm values for beef being recorded at the weekly Frankton stock sale yesterday when all factions were fairly well supplied, the store pens also holding a good average entry of cattle. A full bench of butchers and export buyers operated mainly on last week’s basis.

Larger framed cattle were included in the penning of steers and for these j the demand was animated at values that were sometimes Just a shade firmer than last week. The top price was £ls against £l4 last week, a line of six heavy prime sorts changing hands at an average of £l4 17s 6d. Medium pens were quoted from £lO to £l2 ss, while from £8 12s 6d to £9 10s was paid for smaller descriptions. For the fourth week in succession the best ox was quoted up to 39s per 1001 b. Plain quality was represented by the bulk of the entries in the cowand heifer section, but some pens of choice cattle were available. The latter incited keen competition and one particularly choice line sold from £lO to £l2. Ordinary quality descriptions changed hands readily and the prices realised were generally on last week’s level, good prime cattle clearing from £7 to £9 and smaller cattle from £4 10s to £6 ss. Boner cattle were traded at generally unchanged rates, while the same money was paid for calves. Sheep and Calves The quality in the fat sheep section was barely up to standard, but competition was generally unrestricted. Wethers were perhaps just a shade easier than last week, selling from 25s 6d to 345, but ewes, if anything, appeared a little firmer. Fat ewes were traded from 18s Gd to 24s and unfinished lines from 12s to 15s Gd. The demand was good for lambs and these also tended to be a shade firmer. Late rates were repeated for the heavier sorts in the fat pig section, while a fillip to the trade for lighter I lines was given by butter-milk buyers | who re-commenced buying. There I was little change for store pigs, but any changes favoured vendors.
