SETTLERS FAREWELLED

SEVERAL PRESENTATIONS MADE The Patterson family, pioneer settlers of Pukeatua, were farewelled in the local hall by a large gathering of settlers. Friends were • also present from Lichfield, Horahora, Arapuni, Parawera and Kihikihi. Effective stage' decorations of bamboo and large bowls of chrysanthemums and greenery had been artistically arranged in the hall, where music supplied by Mr H. George, of Arapuni, assisted by Mrs West and Miss Ferguson. dancing was enjoyed. In the social room card tables were arranged and provided amusement for non-dancers. During the evening songs were given by Mrs Holmes and Miss Ferguson and Messrs Hudson and Thomas. The duties of master of ceremonies were carried out by Mr Hudson. Mesdames Kurth, Jemmett, McKee, Donald and Crook were in charge of the supper arrangements. After supper, Mr Patterson senr., and Mrs Stanley Patterson received parting gifts from the settlers and friends from Arapuni and Horahora. Mr Frank Kurth, a member of a pioneer family, traversed the early years ot settlement and the part played by Mr Patterson, senr. and the late Mrs Patterson in the social life and progress of the district. Mr and Mrs Stanley Patterson had followed. lie wished them success and happiness in their new home. Mrs Jemmett presented Mr Patterson with a handsome travelling rug, and Mrs Stanley Patterson with a beautiful walnut chiming clock. Mrs Crook expressed regret at losing old friends. She presented Mrs Patterson with a. box of toilet requisites. accompanied by the best wishes of the Women’s Division. Mrs S. Patterson, who regretted the unavoidable’ absence of her husband, and Mr Patterson, suitably responded.

The guests were accorded musical honours, dancing being resumed.
