RITURNB IN DOMINION ACTIVITY IN MARCH The value represented by building permits Issued in the larger towns in March was £829,764. an increase of £182,953 above the total In February, and of £342.846 above the total In March of last year. The March. 193*. figure Is the highest monthly tote! recorded einoe July, 1929. Permits issued tn March for the erection of new dwellings totalled 547, an increase of 112 above the total in February, and of 822 above the total in March. 1937. The statistics of building permits Include particulars of new buildings and major alterations and additions in the larger towns commenced by Government Departments and Education Boards, although permits may not actually be Issued. Figures for March, 1938, were: New dwellings, 231; other new buildings. 6; alterations, etc.. 9; total value, £297,17?. All of the 231 new dwellings here mentioned were commenced by the Government Housing Construction Department, which, during the month, also commenced the erection of 86 dwellings In localities outside the scope of these building permit statistics. Permits issued for the erection of new dwellings In the financial year 1987-38 totalled 4872, as compared with 328? In the previous financial year. The peak month during the year Just past was in March, 1938, when 547 such permits were Issued. October, 1937 (492 permits) being also a relatively high month. The total value represented by all permits Issued in the larger towns in 1937-38 was £8.161.939. an increase of 50.2 per cent, above the total in 1936-37 (£5,433.000).
