SAFETY OF CHILDREN

CONDITION OF HEAPHY TERRACE SCHOOL COMMITTEE'S CONCERN Concern at the state of the northern end of Heaphy Terrace was expressed in a letter from the Fairfield School Committee which came before the Waikato County Council at its monthly meeting to-day. The chairman, Mr J. A. Sampson, presided. The surface was in a dangerous condition, stated the letter and the large number of children cycling to school had either to take grave risks by travelling on the road, or to disregard the law by cycling on the footpath. The" committee requested that urgent steps be taken to have the roadway re-surfaced, making it possible for young children to maintain complete control of their cycles while passing motor traffic. It was stated that the work would cost a considerable amount of mone'v and could not be undertaken at present.
