MANGLED BODY

FOUND ON RAILWAY PROBABLY AUCKLAND MAN FALL OFF LIMITED EXPRESS? Believed to have fallen from the southbound limited express last evening, a badly mutilated body of a man aged about 30 was found alongside the railway line between Amokura and Mercer at about 7 o’clock this morning. A driving license gives the only clue to the man’s identity, bearing the name of James Philip Milne, of 31 Speight Road, Kohimaramara, Auckland. When found this morning the body was terribly mutilated and it is thought that the man fell from the express last evening and that several carriages passed over his body before it was thrown aside. Evidence does not seem to show that other trains struck the body, although 15 trains passed over the line during the night. An Auckland-Napier railway ticket purchased in Auckland yesterday was found in one of the pockets of the man's suit. The discovery was made by the fireman of a goods train which left Mercer at 7 a.m. He saw the body, clothed in a grey tweed suit, a coat and a pair of black shoes, and reported the matter to the Mercer station from Whangamarino. Linesmen were immediately despatched to guard the body until the arrival of the police and the body was later removed to the Mercer railway station.
