FARMERS AND DIBEABE USE OF RESEARCH WORKERS FACIAL ECZEMA PROBLEM That the farming industry is not satisfied that full use is being mad* of research workers in the Government service in investigating the present outbreak of facial eczema was the opinion expressed in a resolution carried at a meeting yesterday of the farmers’ committee set up at the mass meeting at Kereone to further investigations into the facial eczema epidemic. As the disease was not a veterinary problem, the committee in another resolution demanded that either research workers qualified in plant and soil chemistry be placed in charge of the investigation or that the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research be made solely responsible for this side of the investigation. The committee also considered that in view of the recent severe losses caused by the outbreak of facial eczema that the full report of Dr. John Hammond, of England, be published immediately. It was pointed out that Dr. Hammond was invited to New Zealand to advise regarding the organisation required for animal husbandry research work, part of his expenses being provided by the New Zealand Dairy Board. Compensation Wanted In a further resolution, the committee stated that in view of the fact that many farmers in the Auckland Province have sustained losses from facial eczema from which they will find extreme difficulty in recovering, the Government be requested to set up a farmers’ committee to act under Government supervision in investigating the individual losses sustained, and that a Government grant be made available for payments by way of financial relief to enable these farmers to re-stock their farms.
