FATALITY ON FARM
LITTLE BOY’S DEATH TRODDEN ON BY HORSE INQUEST AT MORRINSVILLE (Special to Times) MORRINSVILLE, Monday About nine o’clock this morning Stuart Stephen Barrett, 17-inonths-old son of Mr and Mrs Victor Barrett, of Hangawera Road, Morrinsville, was trodden on by a farm horse that was tied to a post. The child was rushed to hospital but died an hour later. At the inquest held before Mr G. Hedge, district coroner, at the Morrinsville Courthouse this afternoon, evidence was given by Viotor Stuart Barrett, that he was a sharemllker on Mr N. Bodmin’B farm, Hangawera Road. He was inside when he heard a crash. His wife and he ran outside and found that the. gate on which the child had been swinging had fallen, startling the horse which turned round and trod on the child. Roy Douglas Barrett, brother of the previous witness, said he tied the reins to a post while he opened the gate to take a saok of coal to the house. The gate fell, causing the little boy and an older sister, who were on the gate, to fall to the ground by the horse. One hind foot of the horse trod on the little boy. The coroner’s finding was that deceased died from injuries accidentally received at his parent’s home. Death was due, in terms of the medical evidence, given by Dr. S. Morrow, to a perforation of the lung caused by the horse's hoof.
