STOCK EXCHANGE

APATHY OP INVEBTORB BUSINESS AT A STANDSTILL (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) (Received May 16, 11.50 a.m.) LONDON, May 15 Even the aridity of the country is scarcely worse than the city, where stockbrokers are crying out for business like farmers for rain. There have been no special developments, either political or economic, to account for the apathy of investors, who simply decline to be interested. Acftjffly, apart from gold shares and aircrafts, has been almost at a standstill throughout the week. The Financial News considers that the air defence criticisms have had an unsettling effect on the public and have helped to dull its initiative. The commodity markets are similarly lifeless, although tin has recovered sharply in the hope that the Malayan referendum will result in the adoption of a buffer pool scheme. Sugar has showed a distinctly improved tendency, due to the feeling that Government bujfng will reduce the raw stocks in Britain to a reasonably normal level.
