CALL OF THE FELLS
By winding river and sunlit tarn By stony paths up the steep hillside By rocks and bracken the sheep tracks lead Out on the fells of the west moorland. The sun glows hot and the wind blows cool White clouds sail over the soft blue sky. The rugged hills rise purple and brown, Round the grey-green fells of the west moorland. The vista widens of woods and meres With range beyond range of distant hills So space and vision and freedom reign O’er the open fells of the west moorland. A distant sheep through the silence calls A stream flows softly over the stones Quiet descends, the heart is at rest On the peaceful fells of the west moorland. A child’s dear memories, youthful dreams, Sorrow and joys, a deepening calm— All are here, and the heart is at home On the friendly fells of Westmorland. —Edith Doyle.
