LEAGUE OF NATIONS

ADMISSION OF ABYSSINIANS TO PARTICIPATE IN THE DISCUSSION STATEMENT ON THE ANGLO-ITALIAN AGREEMENT (United Press Assn. —Elec. Tel. Copyright) (Received May 10, 11.30 a.m.) GENEVA, May 9 A private session of the Council of the League of Nations adjourned after a brief meeting for agenda purposes. The Abyssinian delegates, Taszaz and Modhen occupied observers’ seats, but did not participate in the proceedings at the subsequent secret meeting. Haili Selassie was not present. The secret session discussed a compromise formula, with the object of admitting the Abyssinians. Eventually a formula was found through the efforts of Viscount Halifax, whereby Haili Selassie’s representatives will be allowed to participate in the discussion when the Abyssinian case is taken up. Mr W. Jordan (New Zealand) supported M. Litvinoff (Russia) in defending the Abyssinians’ right to he present, which led to a discussion, in which the Latvian and Polish delegates countered M. Litvinoff’s arguments. In the course of this afternoon’s meeting of the Council Viscount Halifax was invited by the President to make a statement on the recent agreement between Britain and Italy. Viscount Halifax intimated that he would make a statement to-morrow. Ktjus mi
