August 26 When Dick Beaumont called in at Southampton to buy provisions for the yawl, he was detained by the police and brought to London. Later he was charged at Bow Street Police Court with passing a worthless cheque in a West End hotel. The Prosecutor said a more serious charge was pending. Bail was not j granted. I Beaumont's solicitor said the trip ; was not likely to eventuate. On August 19 it was slated that six self-styled "Mayfair playboys” | were to sail on a world-wide cruise in . a 50l't. yawl. They said they were j “fed up with debs and debts” and I j wanted to show that they were able '•" do manual work. The intended j voyagers were: Dick Beaumont, son ; 11 and navigator; Captain Bill ’Paterson, .i Rugby star; Ronald Gaunt, nephew 01 Sir Guy Gaunt; Dick Harrison. an Australian crash “stuntcr"; | Arthur Cortez, a descendant of the famous explorer; and Daddy Ryall, a 1 (Jcjlun tea planter.
