UNEASINESS IN AUSTRALIA TO MAKE A STRONG EFFORT LESS CONTROVERSY IN DOMINION United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright. LONDON, August 27 In a leading article on Australian and New Zealand defence, the Times says the difference of viewpoint of the Lyons and Curtain parties is less significant than the fact that both sides are pledged to make the strongest effort of which a deeply uneasy Australia feel-s itself capable. There is less controversy in New Zealand, adds the journal. Mr Savage lias made it plain that the Dominion is concerned with the defence not only of New Zealand, but of the British Commonwealth as a whole. NEW BRITISH CRUISER TO UNDERGO TRIALS' (Official Wireless.) RUGBY, August 26 The 90D0-ton cruiser Sheffield, built by Vickers Armstrong at Newcastle, and launched by the Duches-s of Kent more than a year ago, left the Tyne for her acceptance trials to-day. Sha will proceed later to Chatham. THE TROOPING SEASON SAILINGS DURING SEPTEMBER DRAFTS FOR THE FAR EAST r (Official Wireless.) RUGBY, Aug. 26 The trooping season will open on September 7, when the new troopship Dunera will leave Southampton for Hongkong with naval crews and Royal Air Force drafts for (lie Far East stations, and with military drafts for Hongkong. Other sailings during the month will include the Somersetshire, on September 11, with the third brigade of the Royal Horse Artillery for Egypt; the Lancashire on September 14, with military drafts for India; and the Nevasa, on September 21, with the second battalion of the Black Watch for Palestine. The Nevasa will also carry families of the first battalion of the Royal Sussex Regiment to Egypt, where they will join the battalion on its move from Palestine to Egypt. The Somersetshire will bring back from Egypt the first brigade of the Royal Horse Artillery and Is due at Southampton on October 5. RECRUITING IN BRITAIN A BIG INCREASE REPORTED (Official Wireless.) RUGBY, Aug. 26 The War Office announces that the recruiting figures for the Regular Army last week were the best for any week during August since the year 1932. The number of recruits approved during the week was 655.
