LETTER TO CONSTABLE

POLICE QUEST FOR WRITER INSURANCE AGENT CHARGED. (By Telegraph.— rress Association.) . ASHBURTON, Saturday. A search of many days by detectives among business houses recently resulted in the appearance at the Police Court yesterday of Roger Frederick Patterson, insurance agent, who was charged with sending through the mail an Indecent letter to Constable T. Harris, of Ashburton. The letter, which was of a most indecent nature, was signed “You Swine.” Detectives Investigated score* of typewriters before deciding that the letter was written on one in the office of the United Friendly Societies’ dispensary. The evidence took most of the day and the case was adjourned for two weeks. It was stated by experts that the letter was typed on the U.F.S. machine and the signature bore characteristics shown in accused’s specimen writing. Accused stayed at an hotel where Constable Harris stayed and he was prosecuted by Constable Harris some time ago for drinking a glass of ale at table. It was stated by the manager of the U.F.S. that accused never had access to his typewriter. The case has aroused unusual interest in Ashburton.

A plea of not guilty was entered. The hearing Is unfinished and was adjourned for two weeks.
