CLOUDBURST IN NORTH
HIGHWAY BLOCKED WHANGAREI, Wednesday A cloudburst broke over the hills near iKaulka Road, on the western side of the Whangarei borough, early this afternoon, but the deluge did not last more than about 15 minutes. Preceded by two or three claps of thunder, the rain fell in torrents, making it almost Impossible to see across the street. The stream at Kaulka Road rose fully five feet, and overflowed its banks. Houses in King Street were marooned for a few hours. The highway through Hukerenul, was blocked, three feet of water flowing across It. Farmers In the Hlkurangl swamp area removed their stock in anticipation of a flood coming down. The rainfall of 3*in. for the 24 hours ended at nine o’olock this morning, brings the total fall for this year to date to 62.86 inohes, which is in excess of the average yearly fall for the past IQ years, 62.37 inches.
