NEW ZEALAND CRICKETERS MATCH WITH HAMPSHIRE. HOME TEAM 393 FOR EIGHT. United Press Assn,—Elec. Tel. Copyright. LONDON, August 21. The New Zealand cricketers commenced a match to-day against Hampshire. The county team, batting first, was favoured by a perfect wicket and a fast outfield. Hampshire had scored 393 for eight wickets at -stumps. Lowry, Page, Wallace, Lamason and Roberts were omitted from the New Zealand team. Hadlee, who has recovered from a leg injury, was given another trial, Lamason fielding for him. New Zealand began splendidly and at one stage had taken four Hampshire wickets for 76. Cowle was deadly prior to lunch, when his figures were: Fourteen overs, two maidens, 38 runs, three wickets. One of his victims was caught In the slips and one behind the wickets. Assumed the Mastery. After lunch the batsmen, taking full advantage of the favourable conditions. gradually assumed a complete mastery of the bowling. Pothecary and Creese, left-handers, added 109 runs, and Herman gave a fine exhibition of hitting, securing eleven fours, two sixes and tw r o threes. New Zealand tried seven bowlers. Dunning was the only one able to restrain the batsmen for any length of time. The fielding was a strange mixture. The players’ ground fielding was bril - liant, but they were erratic when the ball was in the afr. Carson took e. fine catch on the boundary. Happy Holiday Crowd.
