GAOL SENTENCE
UNEMPLOYMENT FRAUDS. “ BECOME A PUBLIC SCANDAL." (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) GREYMOUTH, Monday. Declaring that the frequency of frauds on the Employment Promotion Fund had become a public scandal. Mr R. Ferner, S.M., imposed a sentence of two months’ hard labour on Frank 'Bogue (52), married, wbo secured £24 0s 5d from the Employment Division of tho Labour Department. Christchurch, by falsely representing that he was unemployed and had no income. OFFENCE BY BARMAN. WAR PENSION EXCEEDED. MAGISTRATE’S LENIENCY. (By Telegraph.—rrcss Association.) WELLINGTON. Monday. Cyril Paul Theobard (42), a barman, pleaded guilty to-day to making three false statnients under the War Pensions Act that lie had been unemployed for 12 months whereas he was working continuously as a .barman during that period. The police stated that accused received £BS 17s 8d in excess of Ills pension. Counsel said accused served honourably in the war and was left for dead on the field but recovered. He saved anottier man’s life and had been unemployed for some time and succumbed to temptation, continuing to make no returns when lie got work The Magistrate. Mr W. F. Stikvoll. said future eases would bo severely dealt with. He was being lenient only because accused was severely wounded in the war. Accused was admitted to 18 months,’ probation and ordered to refund tho money Improperly received.
