HOSTESSES’ EVENING.

LYCEUM CLUB FUNCTION. ANTIQUE FROCK PARADE. An air of spring was lent to the lounge of the Waikato Lyceum Club last evening by lovely bowls of golden shaded Iceland poppies and foliage, and a profusion of golden mimosa blossom, on the occasion of a hostesses’ evening arranged by Mesdames A. E. Sandford, T. G. Reynolds and D. Robertson. The lounge was thronged with members and friends, and the most interesting and delightful programme that had been arranged was warmly and appreciatively received, and the evening a particularly enjoyable and successful one. Items were given as follows: —Selections, including a lullaby composed by Miss Sydney Strang, of Hamilton, by Mrs A. English (piano), Miss Helen Hey wood (’cello) and Miss Margaret Roe (violin) ; songs, Mrs S. A. Bennett, Mr J. Battersby, Mr I\. L. Sandford; a short play-»reading, “Square Pegs,” Mrs Clive Henry and Mrs A- Pringle Nelson; and elocution, Mrs A. M. Fahey. Unusual and most interesting was a parade of antique frocks, arranged and commented on by Mrs G. L. Taylor, of Cambridge, when the rustling taffetas and brocades, and soft laces of other days and times lived again for a little on modern models. Several of the frocks were over a hundred years old, and almost all had interesting little stories attached to them. Incidental music for the parade was played by Mrs H. J. McMullin. A very happy evening concluded with the serving of supper. The hostesses received the guests on arrival, Mrs Sandford wearing a frock of aquamarine chiffon velvet and lace and black satin coatee, Mrs Reynolds poppy red cobweb lace and white fur coatee, and Mrs Robertson midnight blue cloque with gold clips. The president of the Club. Mrs Hugh Douglas, was wearing amethyst chiffon velvet with fur coatee. Among the many present were:— Mesdames P. Newland, A. 11. Tompkins, R. O. E- Carey, G. L.
