HAMILTON ORPHANS.

WOMEN FRIENDS ENTERTAINED. A HAPPY TIME SPENT. What a friendly, happy crowd the Hamilton Orphans are—and when they have their wives, sweethearts, women relatives and friends with them they seem to excel themselves I “Ladies’ Night” on Saturday was a particularly successful affair, with a record crowd and everybody in a merry mood. ' Mr A. E. Sand ford was an ideal chairman, with some funny stories to link up the items and touching a deeper note in his little topical talk on life as compared with a game of football. The musical programme was exceptionally good. The orchestra, under the direction of Mr W. A. King, is developing into a fine combination, and its operatic and other selections were much enjoyed. A male octet, led by Mr J. T. Battersby—Messrs K. P. Eade, E. 11. Quill, W. Trembath, W. Richards, K.- L. Sandl'ord. G. Wheeler and H. Arthur—was an innovation that was very acceptable, its singing of the Anvil Chorus from “ II Trovatore ” and the Soldiers’ Chorus from “ Faust ” being greatly appreciated. Mr Kennetli Sandford is a young singer with an exceptionally promising voice. “ al Factotum ” was ;(n ambitious thing to tackle, but he made a great success of it. Operatic numbers by Mr J. T. Battersby and .Mrs 11. McLean, ballads by Mrs S. Bennett (her final number was a gem of its kind) and Mr K. 11. Quill, and clever sketches by Mr A. Kastbrook were greatly enjoyed. Mrs A. English and Mrs Myra Booth were sympathetic accompanists. And then there was Ossie Cheesman. who played Hungarian dances and other items very artistically on Ihe piano-accordion. The usual Orphans’ supper of beer and pies was served. Altogether it was a very happy night.
