“Family Affairs” at Wellington. The Thespians’ next production in Wellington. Gertrude Jcnning’s play, •Family Affairs,” had great success in London with a brilliant cast headed by Lilian Braithwaite and Athene Sevier. “Family Affairs” is drawing-room •omrdy that deals with a most amusing md erratic family. W.E.A. Drama Circle. The bright and witty comedy “Laburnum Grove,” by J. B. Priestley, was read at the W.E.A. on Tuesday last. The following players took pari : Lucy Baxley, Miss D. Gadd; Elsie Radfern, Miss L. Armitage; Bernard Baxley, Mr A. P. Nelson; George Bailfern, Mr PL Purdy; Harold Russ, Mr J. Page; Mrs Radfern. Mrs Purdy; Inspector Stack, Mr W. Earle; Joe Fletten, Mr de la Mare; Sergeant Morris, Mr H. M. Davidson. It was announced that “Rats of Norway,” by Keith Winter, would be read at the next meeting on August 17th. Melodrama by Wanganui Playwright. Miss Mavis Jack, of Wanganui, was the recipient of many congratulations last week on the successful presentation of her three-act play ”Bv Crook or By Hook." The play was staged by the Wanganui Repertory Theatre for two nights lo capacity audience^. The plot told of a neurotic young man who was a victim of ihe drug habit and of an unscrupulous woman and an accomplice who look advantage of his illness to make over Ihe bulk of his fortune to themselves before setting out to despatch him with as little fuss as possible. •How they were foiled -by the members of the household in which the drama was enacted, assisted by a woman detective, brought the play to an Interesting climax. The suspenre was well maintained and Ihe audience were kept guessing as lo the identity of several of 1 lie characters until the last. Other Activities. For its production or “ Bio nil a ” Ihe Invercargill operatic Society will have a chorus of 30 and a ballot of Jack and Svlvia Kelleway, sketch artists to appear in Hamilton shortly with the Frank Noil revue company arc brother and sister-in-law respectively of Cecil Kelleway. who was Imre with the Clads* Monchieff company.
