AWATEA TRIALS.
ENGINEERS SATISFIED. GREATER SPEED DENIED. Describing the refitting and the subsequent trials of the. Union Steam Ship Company’s liner Awatea, Mr T. B. Whyte, who is a brother of Mr A. B. Whyte, of Hamilton, and who is superintendant of the Goekatoo Dockyard. where the work was undertaken. told a Waikato Times reporter to-day that the engineers were all well satisfied with the vessel, but ho denied reports that as a result of the improvements the Awatea would ho able to at tain a much faster speed. Mr Whyte said that the overhauling operations had occupied nine weeks. The funnel* had been lengthened lo carry the smoke a wav from the boat -decks and superstructure The two new gears, which we-e heavier and were fitted mainly tor the purpose of balancing the vessel, weighed about 85 tons, as compared ■with the old once, which weighed 7 8 tons.
