“END OF VOLUNTEERS.”
FIRE BOARD AMALGAMATION. OPINION AT TE AROHA. (Special to Times.? TE AROHA, Thursday. The question of amalgamation of Are boards came before the Te Aroha board at its quarterly meeting. “If amalgamation comes into force, and all boards are Field answerable lo a central control body in Wellington, such as is proposed, it will be the end of the volunteer lire brigade system," stated Mr W. Skegg, who considered that even if amalgamation we v e brought about the work of administration would be delegated to the local borough councils who would be in a similar position to school committees under the education boards.
Mr P. Coulter, M.P., said he knew of nothing in the proposed Bill which insisted on lire boards amalgamating, and lie would like to see such notification befofc encouraging a motion or even a discussion on the matter.
The superintendent, Mr P. Pilkington, said the United Fire Brigades’ Association had taken the matter up. Tne Te Aroha Fire Brigade was definitely opposed to the scheme. It was decided to leave the matter in the hands of the chairman.
